Excel functions / Text
CONCAT & the & operator
Join pieces of text together into one.
Syntax
=CONCAT(text1, [text2], ...)Arguments
text1, text2, ... | The cells or typed text to join, in order. |
|---|
How it works
There are two ways to join text. The & symbol goes between each piece: =A2&" "&B2. CONCAT does the same as a function: =CONCAT(A2," ",B2).
Neither adds spaces for you. Any space, comma or other text you type yourself must be inside double quotes.
Older Excel calls the function CONCATENATE, and it still works in new versions.
Example
| A | B | C | D | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Name | |||
| 2 | Nina Shah | nina.shah@example.com | Nina Shah <nina.shah@example.com> | |
| 3 | Omar Reid | omar@example.com | ||
| 4 | Mary Ann Lee | mary.lee@example.com | ||
| 5 |
Result: Nina Shah <nina.shah@example.com>. Joins the name, the typed text " <", the email and ">".
Tips
- To join a whole range with a separator between each item, TEXTJOIN is much shorter.
