ROUND, ROUNDUP & ROUNDDOWN
Round a number to a set number of decimal places.
Syntax
=ROUND(number, num_digits)Arguments
number | The value to round. |
|---|---|
num_digits | Decimal places to keep. 0 rounds to a whole number, and -1 to the nearest 10. |
How it works
ROUND follows the school rule: 5 and above rounds up. ROUNDUP always rounds away from zero, and ROUNDDOWN always towards zero.
Formatting a cell to show fewer decimals only changes how it looks. ROUND changes the value itself, which matters when you add rounded figures together.
Example
| A | B | C | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Value | ||
| 2 | 12.36 | 12.4 | |
| 3 |
Result: 12.4. 12.36 to one decimal place.
Tips
- Use ROUNDUP for things you cannot split, such as boxes needed: =ROUNDUP(items/12,0).
