What you'll practise

  1. Is the cell empty?
  2. Is it a number?
  3. Is it text?
  4. Does it show an error?

Is the cell empty?

The IS functions answer a yes-or-no question about a cell and return TRUE or FALSE.

ISBLANK is TRUE when a cell is completely empty.

In cell D2, check whether the notes cell B4 is empty.

Is it a number?

ISNUMBER is TRUE when a cell holds a number or date, and FALSE for text, even text like "12".

In cell D2, check whether B2 holds a number.

Is it text?

ISTEXT is TRUE for text.

In cell D2, check whether B3 holds text.

Does it show an error?

ISERROR is TRUE when a cell shows any error, such as #DIV/0! or #N/A. B5 divides by zero.

In cell D2, check whether B5 is an error, and show "Check" if it is, otherwise "OK".

Try it in a real spreadsheet

Every step checks your answer instantly and tells you exactly what to fix.
