What you'll practise

  1. Exact match with VLOOKUP
  2. Search any column with XLOOKUP

Exact match with VLOOKUP

VLOOKUP finds a value in the first column of a table and returns something from the same row. Give it what to find, the table, which column to return, and FALSE for an exact match.

=VLOOKUP(what to find, table, column number, FALSE)

In cell E2, find the salary of employee 102 using the table A2:C4. Salary is column 3.

Search any column with XLOOKUP

XLOOKUP is the modern, simpler lookup. You tell it what to find, where to look, and where to return the answer from, and it can look in any column.

=XLOOKUP(what to find, look in, return from)

In cell E2, find Chen's salary by searching B2:B4 and returning from C2:C4.

Try it in a real spreadsheet

Every step checks your answer instantly and tells you exactly what to fix.
