Excel functions / Text
UPPER, LOWER & PROPER
Change text to capitals, small letters, or a capital at the start of each word.
Syntax
=UPPER(text)
=LOWER(text)
=PROPER(text)Arguments
text | The text to change. |
|---|
How it works
UPPER turns every letter into a capital, which suits codes and country abbreviations. LOWER makes every letter small, which is useful for email addresses. PROPER capitalises the first letter of each word, for names and titles.
Numbers and symbols are not changed.
Example
| A | B | C | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Name | ||
| 2 | oMAR reid | Omar Reid | |
| 3 |
Result: Omar Reid. Each word now starts with a capital, and the rest are small.
Tips
- PROPER is not perfect with names like McDonald or O'Neil, so check the results.
