Counting cells
Count filled cells, empty cells, numbers and non-empty entries.
What you'll practise
- Count entries with COUNTA
- Count gaps with COUNTBLANK
- Count numbers with COUNT
- Count the filled-in cells with COUNTIF
Count entries with COUNTA
COUNTA counts every cell that isn't empty, whether it holds text, numbers or dates. Use it to count names or rows of data.
In cell E2, count the names in A2:A7. Row 7 is empty for new people.
Count gaps with COUNTBLANK
COUNTBLANK counts the empty cells in a range. It's a quick way to find missing information.
In cell E2, count how many phone numbers are missing in B2:B6.
Count numbers with COUNT
COUNT only counts cells that hold numbers, so it tells you how many scores have been entered.
In cell E2, count the scores in C2:C6.
Count the filled-in cells with COUNTIF
COUNTIF can count non-empty cells too. The criteria "<>" means "not equal to nothing".
In cell E2, use COUNTIF with "<>" to count the phone numbers that have been filled in, in B2:B6.
Try it in a real spreadsheet
Every step checks your answer instantly and tells you exactly what to fix.
